In August 1997, Tom Peters (author specializing in branding
and personal image creation) published an article in Fast company magazine,
talking about the importance of branding and creating and maintaining personal
reputation .
This article is very interesting and, more than 15 years later, it takes on special relevance due to the preponderance of social networks.
In 2012, the barometer carried out by INESDI, (institute of
digital innovation for professions) on the use of digital professions, revealed
that 50% of companies had used social networks in some part of their selection
processes.
Today the curriculum vitae is no longer just that document
that was sent by letter, not even in its updated version through the form or
email; Currently, the CV of a person consists of this document which we
generate, the more information in our blog, social profiles, opinions of third
parties, etc .
A very common question when a company is going to hire
someone (if not starting in the Human Resources department, often by the future
boss of that person) is to Google what appears about it.
The first thing we will have to do is that same activity ,
look for ourselves on the internet and see what information appears about us .
We have two concepts or ideas that we must manage, on the
one hand, there is that of the personal brand, what we want to spread and offer
to people so that they think about us, but on the other hand we have the
reputation , what they really think about U.S.
For all this, the interesting thing is not only to create
our brand, put our personal image, establish our criteria, but get people to
talk about us and confirm these ideas that we are raising in our brand .
To do this, we have to play with the different existing
parameters, with social networks and with our contacts, to ensure that they
ratify what we are promoting about ourselves, and that the idea that we want to
offer is true.
The first thing to create that brand is to follow a series
of simple steps , depending on where we see they can be divided into a greater
or lesser number, but because many times we can consider that some include
others.
What is your strategy?
The first thing we must do is ask ourselves who we are, what
we know, what we want to do and, from that point on, begin to define where we
want to go.
We must do an introspection , in the same way that when we
create a CV we ask ourselves what knowledge we have, what we have studied or
what we do in our work, for our personal brand we must ask ourselves who we
are, what we want to do, how we want to be seen from the outside .
An important element is knowing what is said about us on the
internet, what image we are projecting of ourselves, with more or less control,
to be able to control and use it .
We will have to see why we want to be in social networks,
what is the goal of starting to create and maintain our own personal brand and
what makes us different from the other millions of people.
In order to establish the strategy, once we know who we are
and how we want the rest to see us, we must see how we want to achieve that
goal, what media or social networks we are going to use, taking into account
that the more we expand our own image, the more solid it will be ; It is not a
matter of creating a profile on Facebook or LinkedIn, but of creating a
strategy through all the networks in a constant and consistent way .
What is said about you on social networks?
From the moment we start to think about it, we must be aware
that our person is most likely already on the internet . From the moment we
have a profile on a social network or have started to write on Twitter or a
blog, we will be registered.
We must see how we appear, different search engines have
different ways of finding the answers . See what tools and for what purpose we
are mentioned on the internet , if it is for an article on which we have made
comments, if it is for a blog that we started and left abandoned, for a
participation in a fair or event that presents our name on the poster or what
reasons we have to appear .
